DIY - Change wiper blade on a budget

So my front wiper blade start squeaking after getting the car for 1 year plus. So I ask around for price to replace the front set wiper, original VW wiper blade will put me back RM190, Bosch replacement RM170 from lelong. I wonder why the high price for a wiper blade? Why cant i just buy something cheap from any accessories shop?

So I went to Jusco to find a wiper blade to mess around. Found one unit 24" for RM8.00 at the car section.

Tool:
1. Cheap wiper blade. Length to suit the original.
2. Original wiper blade. Taken from car.
3. Small screwdriver.

Procedure:

1. Remove original wiper blade from car.
2. Turn the  wiper blade over.
3. Look at the end cap. You will see 2 latch holding the end cap.

4. Use small screwdriver to push these latches.
5. Pull out the end cap.

6. Slide out the original wiper blade rubber.
7. Repeat step 2-6 on the new cheap wiper blade.
8.Compare the rubber profile. It look almost the same. (Right: VW original wiper blade)

 9. Slide in the new wiper blade rubber.
10. Reattach the end cap.
11. Reinstall wiper blade to car.

Conclusion:
1. YES, you can actually take a cheap wiper blade insert and put it in the original VW wiper blade.
2. "You pay peanut, you get monkey". Probably this rubber will not last as long as original. Good reputed brand BOSCH or PIAA will cost some money but not easy to find. VW service center always keep stock.
3. A bit surprised to see rust formation when i removed the end cap. This will be a major factor to replace the whole set.
4. VW uses propriety attachment to attach the wiper blade. It could be the design itself is an Intellectual Property. Anyone who want to use the same design, must get approval from VW or risk legal action. It also reason why BOSCH and PIAA aftermarket wiper blade almost at the same price. Maybe cheaper by RM20-30 only. Compared with generic standard attachment BOSCH wiper blade that will cost 1/3 of a same length by VW wiper blade.

VW Polo 1.2TSI EPC, TC and Engine Check Light

Dear Friends, I experience another episode of EPC, TC and Engine Check Light yesterday 24/2/2013. These long story to share my experience.

Background story:
28/1/2013-Wife complained that EPC, Traction Control (TC) and engine check suddenly light up. Engine suddenly lost power during drive. RPM limited to 1000-2000 only.
29/1/2013- Service Center full. Tried around KL and Selangor. Turned down by all SC.
30/1/2013- Managed to book appointment with Federal Auto PJ SC. The mechanic informed that my Polo ECU and DSG still in old version 1.0. I objected that i did the update last time in July 2012 in Jln Ipoh SC. Mechanic said maybe Jln Ipoh SC lied to me. :?: They updated the software and DSG. Problem solved until yesterday.
24/2/2013- I was driving around 30-40 kmph, when suddenly the EPC and TC light up. Car runs normally, but i stop to the side, just in case. Turn off and start the engine again. Now only CHECK ENGINE light up.

Immediately i return back to my house. I insert the OBDII dongle and run TORQUE app on my android phone.

26/2/2013- In the morning Engine Check Light is no more. My wife bring the car to SC at noon, and cannot find any error in the car. SC confirmed that all software is updated and advise me to come to SC immediately if the problem occur again. Even told my wife to not turn off the engine. BASKET!! Every time i have problem and call any SC, you all said bay full. Come back later tomorrow.
